Pat deGogorza Artist, Sculptor, Painter

Wood and Stone connect to the earth in its primary state, touching the place of origin. Carving in these materials connects to the Earth’s ancient spirits. Forms emerge in present time, last for a while, then return to elemental sleep. These shapes are carved from  passing dreams and spirit of one person’s life.

Press Release

A retrospective exhibit of the sculptures, prints, and paintings of Patricia de Gogorza.

Opens: May 1 – June 6, 2017.

Reception on May 7 from 5-7pm

At "Gallery 2" of the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, VT.

Commissioned sculptures by the artist grace the Burlington Bike Path, the Pavilion of the State Office Building in Montpelier, and Johnson State College.  De Gogorza moved to northern Vermont in 1971 after a decade in France, Portugal, and New York City.  Founder of the ARA (Art Resources Association) in 1975, she continued to direct and instruct ARA workshops for seven years and went on to teach workshops at the Vermont Studio Center, The Carving Studio in West Rutland, VT, various colleges, and school art programs.

Entering a de Gogorza exhibition is like wandering into a spirited forest ablaze with color.  “Nature stored all these secrets—the tree or stone show the patterns of history,” the artist said.  She works to release a character already inherent in the material to find an implicit meaning in an emerging form.  Through the process of painting and sculpting, “you yourself become who you are,” while the work itself begins to speak—translating into the experience of whomever sees it and in the long run, transforming reality.

The exhibition runs from May 1- June 6, 2017.

The reception coincides with the May 7 open

studio tour of the “Vermont Week” artists

at the Vermont Studio Center.

On Memorial Day weekend, May 27-28,

the artist will be present from 10am-5pm

on both days as part of the Crafts Council

statewide Open Studios, giving a talk

at 2pm on Sunday, May 28.
